![]() She remembered how the night sky was full of stars. Not in the way it was here, but overflowing with thrice as many lights and painted with sooty dark tones of sprinkled color; tones bleeding across the inky blackness like ink dropped into a glass. The daytime sky was a rich indigo at midday and the sunsets brought bursts of fire, crimson and verdant green and colors the short-lived folk have no names for. She remembered the sweetness of the air and water. It was the first thing she noticed about this world, how dead the sky and air seemed, as though half of it's life had been drained away, so slowly that no native folk of these lands ever noticed. The sky was wrong, it was all wrong and even the most lush of forests were not as lovely and wild and pure as her home. Anything was better than that void she'd fallen into, that place between worlds, that time without time. This was not her home and it could never be. This was a world of blood and iron, of cruelty and war and killing. Still, she must endure. Others of her kind were out there, she knew they had to be. If they'd found a way to live like this, she would as well. Her hands would come to know the callouses of hard work, but never the touch of gem and gold. She preferred it that way. Her scars sometimes drew stares but only from those who were soft and unable to live outside their wastefully large homes and safe city walls. Her spear would taste blood for more than simply hunting to survive, or defending herself from dangerous creatures, for violence and greed was a part of this world. Her hardships, her struggles were a great looming mountain; harsh, foreboding and dangerous. Yet, like so many other of her people; those long past and those yet to come, she would bring down the mountain.
She was Wind and Water.
Lhyra's species, Vukanii originated from the Fae Realm. All Vukanii have small antelope-like horns, male's horns being slightly larger and thicker on average. They have a humanoid upper half, and a goat/satyr-like lower half with cloven hooves. Their ears are that of a Hare, and they have a leonine tail. Most have a fair to medium complexion, and red or gold hair. The average height is 5'11-6'4, and there is little to no dimorphism present. While they are generally crafters and merchants, the wild and often dangerous Fae-lands makes it almost impossible to survive if one is not a skilled fighter, therefore most of them are strong and agile, able to fight with spears, staffs, and bows, as well as being adept at barehanded fighting. There were eight different tribes of Vukanii, Lhyra was an outcast from her own from a young age, when she accidentally killed the chieftain's son. It was a complete freak accident that occurred, with several witnesses, however the laws were quite clear, and they required banishment. Vukanii (and most Fae) culture forbids killing one of your own kind or kin. Even Vukanii who have committed terrible crimes will never be executed. However, the fate in store for them is considered by some to be worse than death. They are stripped of their name in a ceremony that forbids anyone ever speaking it again. They are declared 'Nameless' and forced to live outside the village for the rest of their days. They are not suppose to join any other tribe or village, and are to live as hermits. Not all of them adhere to this completely, but it's considered a way to pay for what you have done, and perhaps even one day regain some of your honor again. There are stories that Vukanii who have continued to commit acts of violence even after punishment, have met with horrible ends, but there is never any proof, they simply die in some untimely manner. A banished Vukanii will no longer exist, and be more or less ignored if they return to the village. Most will only wander back to watch sadly from time to time. The system of Vukanii punishment all relies on the fact that they are creatures with complex systems of honor, and as Fae, giving their word on something binds them to it Lhyra was banished in this way, and lived a lonely life for most of her years in the Fae Realm. There was a small group of Sotarii hunters and warriors, whom she befriended. Although her oaths kept her from fully joining them, and becoming part of their village or tribe, she joined them on some of their hunts and adventures. She had gotten adept at sneaking into her old village without being seen, listening to their stories, and occasionally, stealing small things that wouldn't be missed. She felt bitter toward what had happened, but she also missed being a part of them. It was because of this, that she learned of a horrible plot. The old Chieftain, and several of the Elders had struck a deal with some visiting beings from another Realm. They had arranged for Sotarii and Ieilaopa Fae, several tribes of each, to be captured, and sold as slaves and 'pets' to the wealthy beings of that world. Because of this, the Tribe was to be granted riches and exotic materials beyond anything they'd ever seen. She broke away, thinking only of her friends, who'd been so kind of her in her darkest hours. However, one of the elders had seen her, and she was struck with dart, awakening to find herself locked in a cage, and well tied. It took her two days to escape, and by the time she got to the village, it was too later. She found it in ruins, most of the inhabitants, dead, or gone. When she learned that one of her closest friends had been killed, and a couple others had been taken, she spead back to her home village, furious, and willing to shed the blood of her own kind. She was struck by the curse that had been placed on her people, by a powerful Fae Witch, who'd called on her Goddess, to unleash vengeance upon the tribe. She found herself then, banished to the Inbetween, a place that was not their world or any other. A dismal half-world. There, most of her kind perished. Lhyra survived, but when she found her way out through an old weathered stone gateway, it lead to the same world the betrayed ones had been sent to. She's since vowed to find any of them she can, if they are still alive, and free them or help them in any way she is able. |
